movie reveiw- mertopolis

metropolis is a 1920 science fiction movie set in a furtusic city which has a heavily severe class divide leading the richer side of the city to live above ground while the working labor class is forced underground is very basic living conditions, only to come to the surface to work on the machines that power the entire city constantly. the Film uses Marxism as the main theme as seen from the class divide and the mental states of each side of the city showing how the communist divide that was made impacted the city so servelry. one of the scene from the film shows a metaphorical form of sacrifice to the large machine that countless workers were working on each ether being pushed into the machine or willingly be fed to the machine, just to then transition back to what the machine looks like and with workers being transported on stretchers.

while on the other side of the economic divide of this futuristic city it goes to a rooftop garden where the wealthy class is seen pretty much playing and partying at the same time as the workers how are working themselves to death. but the son of the businessman after seeing Maria going off to find her he stumbles on the area for labor with the machines. which was quite interesting as he'd never stepped out the comfort of the contained life that he knew, compared to he saw he was in a conflicted position of seeing such horrors for the first time leading to a run to his father to talk about what he saw. later in the film, Mira was kidnapped and used to bring the machine man to life but the inventor.

after the machine came to life through beautiful transition music it went through the city starting to cause a ruckus in the city above and bellow. later in the film in the underground chapel area, the machine started to rial everyone up into a form of frenzy revolution, which was quite interesting as before the labor class just stuck to there lanes but now thanks to the machine they have a form of will to fight back against there opressers which were the machines. as the labor class made it's way to the " heart machine" to destroy it the film pans back to the lower city for a small second showing the children left behind, which after destroying the "heart machine" the labor class didn't realize they almost killed their own children by drowning them which was quite interesting as this could be a play on words "actions have consequences" meaning that their choices as adults affect their children in the long run/

after the man who ran the heart machine stopped them and ask 'where their children were?' it was pretty interesting to see their reaction the sudden realization of what they have done. after the real Maria and co save the children and put them somewhere safe, Maria got separated from the group and almost burned at the stake which I expected to be a tragedy but the main male character saved her in the end while the machine burned in her place.

To conclude the end of the film was quite interesting as the divide that was once segregated the city was gone as two men from both classes shock hands in peace and Mira got her man which lead to being quite open-ended. the music of the film was very enchanting from start till the end you could tell what was going to happen in each and every scene every form of emotional chat that the cast had. and the design for the machine man was beautiful and smooth which was a major enjoyment of this film, alongside the monster machine design as well.

  1. Hi Coyle,

Have a look back at the comments that Phil left on your 'Caligari' review, as they all apply to the review too. I would suggest getting someone to proofread your writing before you post it, as there are some very basic mistakes in your writing that could be easily fixed. Always make sure that your titles are written correctly, as this is the first thing your reader sees, and it gives a bad first impression if there are spelling mistakes... in this title, for example, you have 'Mertopolis' instead of 'Metropolis'.
You seem to have forgotten to include any quotes in this review, and you are also missing images.
So to summarise what needs to be addressed for the next review -

    1. Check spellings (get someone to proofread)
    2. Capital letters at the start of sentences.
    3. Include quotes and images (and reference them using the Harvard method)
4.Use 'film' instead of 'movie' (as per Phil's previous request)

  2. Hey Coyle - yes - while it's commendable that you're getting your reviews done and published in good time, you do need to demonstrate that you're taking on feedback and using it to improve. It's all about enhancement and learning through doing. In a very basic sense, you also need to demonstrate that you can meet the brief and follow instructions - a key aspect of professionalism in the creative industries - so take another look at what the brief says about the reviews and how they need to be approached. You've got the ideas going on, but not the nuts and bolts of a more academic tone and style - let's see what you can do about that in your next review.
